Speaker 1So for our listeners who might not know, can you just explain what we mean when we say AI agent?
Speaker 2Yeah, so an AI agent is basically a computer program that can make its own decisions and take actions to achieve a goal.
Speaker 1So like a digital assistant.
Speaker 2Yeah, like a digital assistant, but with a lot more autonomy. Like capable of carrying out complex tasks without constant human direction.
Speaker 1And this research paper is specifically focused on the most advanced type of AI agent right.
Speaker 2Yes, the type that can create and execute its own code. Wow, yeah, that's the top rung of the AI agent ladder, so to speak. Okay, and the paper argues that this level of autonomy is where the risks really start to outweigh the benefits.
Speaker 1I'm already intrigued, but before we dive into the paper's arguments, can we? Just take a quick trip back in time. Sure, I'd love to see how this idea of autonomous systems has evolved over the centuries.
Speaker 2Yeah, absolutely so. We can trace this concept back to ancient myths, like the story of Cadmus sewing dragon teeth that turned into soldiers.
Speaker 1Oh, wow, even Aristotle pondered the idea of machines replacing human slaves.
Speaker 2Wow, so interesting. And then we see early examples of self-regulating systems like the water clock invented by Catesybados of Alexandria.

Speaker 1Wow. So the desire to create these machines that act independently has been with us for a long time.

Speaker 1It's like a fundamental human impulse.
Speaker 2It certainly seems that way. It's a recurring theme throughout history.
Speaker 1Yeah, and fast forward to the 20th century. We encounter Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics. Oh, yes, remember, those were the rules designed to ensure robots don't harm humans or disobey orders Exactly. They have had a huge impact on how we think about the ethics of AI, especially as we develop agents with increasing autonomy.
Speaker 2Yes, a robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Exactly those laws, even though they were fictional, have had a huge impact on how we think about AI.
Speaker 1They really have.
Speaker 2So, okay, we've established that this idea isn't new, but let's bring it back to the present.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2What does the landscape of AI agent development look like today?
Speaker 1Well, AI agents today exist on a spectrum of autonomy, from simple programs to highly sophisticated systems.
Speaker 2So it's not just a black and white situation. There are different levels of autonomy.
Speaker 1Exactly. Think of it as a ladder with different rungs.
Speaker 2Oh, okay, I like that visual. Okay, good, what would be on the lower rungs of this AI agent ladder?
Speaker 1At the bottom you have simple processors that operate under complete human control. They just follow pre-programmed instruction.
Speaker 2A basic calculator would be a very simple example of this.
Speaker 1So no real decision-making power. They're just executing commands, right. What's next?
Speaker 2Moving up, you encounter what's called tool calls.
Speaker 1Tool calls.
Speaker 2Yeah, these agents can choose and execute specific functions based on input.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2But they're still ultimately following instructions set by humans.
Speaker 1Can you give me a real world example of that?
Speaker 2Yeah, think of a program that can resize an image. Okay, you, the human, choose the resizing function and the AI agent executes it according to your specifications.
Speaker 1Okay, so they're like specialized workers with a defined set of tools. The human decides which tool to use and the AI agent uses it. Right Makes sense. What's the next rung?
Speaker 2Next are multi-step agents, which can handle more complex workflows. They can break down a task into smaller steps and execute them without constant human intervention.
Speaker 1So we're giving them more autonomy here.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1They're not just executing single commands, they're managing entire processes, right? What would be an example of that?
Speaker 2Imagine an AI agent that can book your entire vacation.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2You tell it your destination and preferences and it handles finding flights, hotels and activities.
Speaker 1Oh, wow.
Speaker 2All while adjusting to changes or unexpected issues.
Speaker 1That's starting to sound pretty advanced.
Speaker 2It is.
Speaker 1But it still feels like the human is ultimately setting the goals.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1And the AI agent is just figuring out the most efficient way to achieve them.
Speaker 2You're exactly right, but at the very top of this ladder we reached the level of AI agent autonomy that this research paper is focused on.
